What you should know about pregnancy massage

Is pregnancy massage different than regular massage?

Absolutely. Pregnancy massage should be treated very differently than a normal massage. A woman's body is going through massive changes during pregnancy and therefore different techniques are required. It is critical to choose a certified pregnancy massage therapist that has the appropriate training to understand you and your baby's unique needs. Before participating in a pregnancy massage, please make sure to ask potential therapists what certifications they hold. Certification and experience ensure the safety of you and your child.

Is pregnancy massage really safe?

In almost all cases pregnancy massage can be received safely and is both therapeutic and relaxing. However, there are some instances in which prenatal massage should be avoided or precautions need to be taken by your therapist. At Body Balance we always encourage you to consult with your primary care physician before receiving a prenatal massage. A massage therapist performing pregnancy massage should be aware of the contraindications associated with massage during pregnancy. A contraindication is simply a circumstance in which certain areas are skipped, different massage techniques are used, or when massage should be avoided altogether.

Does pregnancy massage provide any benefits to me?

It sure does! Increasing circulation, promoting relaxation, preparing the muscles for childbirth, and enhancing joint flexibility are just a few of the benefits. If you are experiencing low back pain, swelling of the hands and feet, headaches, sciatic pain, muscle spasms, myofascial pain, or muscle cramps pregnancy massage can help. Regular pregnancy massage visits are extremely therapeutic as your body is going through its miraculous changes.

How do I find a licensed pregnancy massage therapist in my area?

At this time there is no "licensing" process specifically for pregnancy massage. In order for someone to provide massage treatments in the state of Missouri they must be licensed by the state. The licensing process requires a minimum of 600 hours of training and passing a written examination. The curriculum for the 600 hours of training does not require any training in the area of prenatal massage.

Until an official criteria evolves for pregnancy massage, I suggest you search on the internet or in the yellow pages for massage therapists in your area. Contact potential therapists and conduct an interview. After all finding the right pregnancy massage specialists is important for you and baby both! Ask potential therapists if they accept pregnant clients and then ask questions including but not limited to the following:

1. What training have you had in pregnancy massage? How many hours of training have you had specifically in prenatal massage?

2. What certifications do you hold for pregnancy massage?

3. How much experience do you have with prenatal massage?

4. Do you have a specific intake form for pregnancy massage and are you aware of the contraindications associated with pregnancy massage?

5. Do you have the appropriate tools and cushions needed for a comfortable pregnancy massage experience?
